Plants only exist to reproduce which means that unlike humans the sooner they go to seed the better. No cosmetic surgery for plants then.
The black plastic we see on planting beds not only help keep back weeds but actually make it much easier to plant out seedlings in measured out rows with the correct spacing. Of course you first have to make holes in the plastic before laying down.
If harvested properly the beautiful chard (on my photos) will keep producing until next Spring. That’s a lot of chard.
